The Foreign Correspondent at the Center of It All

Bradford "Brad" Douglas isn't an explorer in the tradition of jungle adventurers or Arctic expeditions — he's a foreign correspondent for a fictitious New York newspaper called The New York World, with bureaus in Paris, Stockholm, and London. His assignments come from Mike Shaughnessy, the paper's roving Managing Editor, and they send Brad directly into the middle of the most volatile political situations of the early Cold War era. That setup made Douglas of the World something a bit sharper than a standard adventure series — it's a political thriller built around the kind of story that was actually appearing on front pages in 1952.

Because Brad covers overseas news, the show put him at real historical flashpoints. One episode has him in Moscow for Stalin's funeral, where Soviet secret agents begin tailing the American journalists in attendance. Another drops him into the Netherlands while covering a Dutch referendum on European unification — where he gets pulled into a kidnapping plot. A third episode places him alongside Iranian Premier Mossadegh just before Mossadegh's actual removal from power. The writing treated recent geopolitical events as story fuel, which gave the series an immediacy that pure adventure fare didn't always have.

Jack Moyles in the Lead

Brad Douglas was played by Jack Moyles, born June 26, 1913, and a thoroughly experienced radio hand by the time Douglas of the World went into production. Moyles started his career at San Francisco stations in the early 1930s, relocated to Hollywood in November 1944, and built a reputation as a reliable freelance actor and narrator across West Coast productions. He's probably best remembered for playing Rocky Jordan in the CBS serials A Man Named Jordan and The Adventures of Rocky Jordan — another character defined by travel, intrigue, and Cold War proximity.

That background made Moyles a natural fit for Brad Douglas. He was comfortable carrying a series on his own voice and knew how to sell urgency without tipping into melodrama. The role didn't require him to do anything dramatically different from Rocky Jordan, but it put him in a journalistic frame rather than a saloon-owner one — slightly more grounded in the headlines, slightly less romanticized. Moyles kept working in radio until his death on January 16, 1973.

What Survives and What It Shows

Douglas of the World was a transcribed series produced for the Armed Forces Radio Service, with production most likely dated to 1952–1953. One source places the recordings at the Capitol Records Tower building in Hollywood. Only four episodes are known to survive, running a combined total of roughly one hour and fifty-nine minutes. The titles are "Double Trouble," "The Murder Rap," "The Terrorists," and "Judgement Day-Last show" — that last title indicating it was the final episode of the run.

The finale is notable on its own terms: Brad Douglas covers a disabled Korean War veteran who threatens to jump from the UN Building in New York, and the episode becomes an explicit tribute to the United Nations. It's a quieter, more pointed ending than you might expect from a political thriller, and it gives the series a sense of intentionality that the four surviving episodes bear out. Very little production paperwork exists for Douglas of the World; most of what's known about the show has been reconstructed from listening to those episodes directly.
